Early bath at Rally Leptinnes

The second outing for the Howlett of Lavenham rally car came to a

premature end.

At Stage 4 of 12  we met a very slippy section with a lot of mud washed on to the road by the recent wet weather.

A small misjudgement saw us slide off the road into the ditch.

The stage was halted for other competitors whilst we were pulled out of the ditch, we then completed the stage.

Our service crew meet us at the end of the stage and made a temporary repair to enable us to continue to the next control.

A detailed inspection by our support team Brad Howlett from Technical Edge Suspension Development then concluded that the Near side suspension was too badly damaged to continue.

Next event is Haute-Senne Rallye at Braine le Compte on June 17th

HOWLETT OF LAVENHAM RALLY REPORT MARCH 2012

Our 2012 rally campaign got off to a good start with the successful completion of the Rallye Des Ardennes on March 31st.The event was based in Dinant south eastern Belgium.

There was a very strong entry with 197 teams at the start. The rally comprised of 5 special stages each covered 3 times, totalling 150 km of competitive driving and 180km of liaison sections.

The 1st loop of 5 stages was completed at a steady pace as it was the first event we have competed in since last October combined with some fog in the lower parts of the valleys. The times where generally competitive.

In the 2nd loop we racked up the pace setting some good times.

On the stage 12 we suffered a puncture 2 kms from the end of the stage losing approximately 15 seconds

Shortly after stage 13 we were delayed on a liaison section which cost 25 seconds of penalties so ended the rally 17thOverall and 4th in class.

The car ran without fault during the whole event.

For a small insight in to the event go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF1jH0w_Jwg

We feature briefly after 6 minutes.

Our next event is Rallye Leptines which is held in Estinnes just South of Mons, Belgium on the 6th May.

USEFUL INFORMATION GUIDE (3)

WINTER IS NEARLY HERE

Most forecasters are predicting another bad winter.  Last winter we had many customers who were unable to get around in their cars during the icy and snowy periods as rural roads and housing estates do not get gritted by the Council.

Some people ask us “Do we need a 4 x 4?”  In most cases the answer is NO.  What you need are the right tyres for the conditions.

Your normal tyres are designed to improve road holding, minimize noise and improve fuel economy.  In the snow, you need wide block treads and a very soft compound.  Winter tyres are designed to operate best at temperatures below 7°c and give good grip in very wet and muddy conditions as well as snow.

As this will probably be the third winter in a row where we will see snow in East Anglia, Howlett of Lavenham have secured stocks of winter tyres in all our regular sizes.

Pre-order your winter tyres now and we will make an appointment in mid October to change over to the new tyres.  At the same time, we will carry out a FREE WINTER CHECK on your car.

USEFUL INFORMATION GUIDE (2)

Holiday Time !!!!!!

Going on Holiday or is it a Staycation this year ?

In any event your car will probably be working extra hard !

Compared with the normal shopping trip or school run your car will be subjected to:

1          Heavier loads

2          Longer driver times at higher speeds

3          Higher temperatures

4          Much greater use of cooling fans and air conditioning units

To help minimise the risk of trouble here are a few tips.

A         Check your tyres, look at the tread and the sidewall both inside and out

(you need a torch ).

B         Adjust the tyre pressures for heavy load if required.

C         Check and top up all the other levels e.g. oil, screenwash etc. Has the car

been   serviced ? Do the cooling fans and air con work ?

D         Make up document pack containing items such as, driving licence, insurance

AA and similar contact details and “In case of emergency” phone numbers for

you and your passengers.

E         Make up an emergency kit containing items such as High Vis jacket, Warning

Triangle,  Bulb Kit, Torch and a Picnic blanket or similar to sit or knell on.

F          Do you have everything to hand attend to a puncture ?It’s better to do a dry

run at homein the daylightwithout a boot full of luggage. Dont forget even if

you call the AA they can’t help if you haven’t  got the Locking Wheel Nut           Key !!!!!!!
